Wow, it has been quite some time since I posted with what, at least in my mind, I call my weekly Monday blog posts. In reality these posts are not exactly running on schedule. Let’s see if I can pull it together.
Like many of you, no doubt, we have had a lot going on these last few months. Somehow the long, lingering days of summer can easily turn into the frenetic, panicked days of gardening, hosting, being hosted, planning a vacation to get away for a bit and relax, recovering from that same vacation and alleged relaxation, prepping for the coming school year while refusing to think about the coming school year — on an on. But still we persevere and are managing to have fun in between the work of having fun.
The Garden
We got a very late start, between my ineptitude and a cold and rainy May. But we are humming along now, cutworms destroying the zucchini notwithstanding. By the beginning of next month we should be nearly overwhelmed by cut flowers and other garden delights. We plan to offer flowers at the stand and some other fun flower-related events.
Projects
Paul is nearly finished with what has been an all-consuming project this summer: finishing the Rock Run House Canteen. We’ve reworked a vintage 1955 Trotwood (made in Ohio!) camper to turn it into a food trailer. As soon as we receive the proper permits (hopefully this week!) we will be offering doughnuts and coffee on Saturday mornings right beside the Breadstand here at Rock Run House. We have some other fun things planned for the RRH Canteen but are starting with the doughnuts. (Everything should start with doughnuts.) July 4th
This one was a big one: the 250th anniversary of the founding of America. We celebrated at the family farm, with a homemade parade and sparklers. This occasion warranted a display of my collection (a generous term) of renderings of George Washington and his beloved wife, Martha, along with other vaguely colonial items: pewter pitchers, etc.

August
- Madden Road Music Fest on August 8th from 2pm-10pm. Our annual family music festival at the farm. A great time of local food and music. Lots of fun, family-friendly elements. Click here for the festival website.
- Sourdough Bread Workshop on August 29th from 1pm-3pm
- Flowers & Tea at Rock Run: Thursdays (2pm-4pm) and Saturdays (10am-12pm) beginning August 27th. Spend a few hours at Rock Run House cutting and arranging flowers for a bouquet to take home. We’ll have herbal tea on offer. A great place to meet friends for a quiet and flower-filled time together! Sign up through our website (link to come)
