April 6th: This Week at Rock Run House

As I write this, the weather has turned cold again, reminding us all of the fickleness of Spring. Not that I am tempted to plant the garden too early or anything — I don’t even have a single seed started. This is the most sluggish I have ever been since I began gardening more seriously. I’m trying not to not worry about it, as things have a way of leveling out with the different stages of plant growth once we get well into June. And having leggy tomato seedlings hanging around waiting for a mid-May frost date is a different sort of stress — one that I’m happy to avoid.

That said, we are in the throes of Spring cleanup around here, so it’s not like I’m sitting around. There is plenty to do even in the absence of taking care of seedlings. The big excitement around here in my middle-aged life is that Paul bought an electric weed-whacker for me to use in keeping the garden tidy. I’ve never used a weed-whacker. I am more of the hippie school of live-and-let-live gardening, but it is never to late to change.

In Breadstand News… our kids have a tournament this weekend, so my baking schedule will be lighter as a result of a packed couple of non-baking days. BUT, I will have plenty of regular loaves, focaccia, and baguettes (or that is the plan anyway).

In Event News… our Spring celebration weekend is coming up on May 8-9. We’ll have a Spring Barn Dance and our second annual Spring Tea & Garden Party. Check out our website for more details.

In the meantime, we’ll be opening up the barn for our Barn Market on April 18th from 10am-12noon, and will be scheduling another Sourdough Workshop for late April/early May so keep in touch about that if you’re interested in attending one of our workshops.

Hope to see you soon at Rock Run House!

Our next Barn Market is on April 18th from 10am-noon.
