March 23: This Week at Rock Run House

Things are picking up around here, which includes the roof of what we call The Grotto. Paul bravely faced the windstorm to repair the roof with riveted screws to keep it where it should be, even though this crazy March wind had other ideas. It was blowing so wildly that a little owl (maybe a baby great horned owl?) took refuge in the chimney of the bread oven for hours and hours, waiting until the wind calmed down before flying away on owl business.

On Saturday we held our first Barn Market of the season. It was great to see people again after a winter spent tucked away in our houses; thanks for stopping by and chatting with us and supporting our efforts at Rock Run House! The Barn Market features local food and bread-making supplies, as well as vintage items, especially housewares and household goods.

The plan is to open up the barn most Saturdays, and we’ll be adding lots of items as the weather warms up: more Ohio-grown and produced food (including fresh produce grown here at Rock Run) as well as handmade goods. As we did last year, we’ll also be offering lots of flowers and other useful things (and yes, flowers are extremely useful in their way!) as we enjoy the bounty that summer brings here in the beautiful and fertile Ohio Valley.

In Breadstand News: the roof is still not back on the original Breadstand, but we’ve managed to put out bread nearly every day and will continue to do so. I’ll have regular loaves Tuesday – Saturday this week, with additional goods on the weekend: focaccia, baguettes, honey oat, maple spelt, and maybe a roasted garlic loaf if all goes according to plan. We’ll also have a few sweet treats on offer, so make plans to stop by if you can. We open at 10am and stay open until 9pm or sold out, whichever comes first.

In Workshop & Event News: our next Sourdough Workshop is on April 2nd from 6-8pm. We’ll have another one later in the month or in early May. We plan to add a few more workshops on other topics later this Spring, so stay tuned for that. And speaking of Spring, our celebration of the season takes place the weekend of May 8-9, with a Spring Barn Dance, Barn Market, and Spring Tea & Garden Party. More about all of that in the next few weeks.

Thanks for your support and reach out at rockrunhouse@gmail.com with any questions about what we’re up to over here! Hope to see you soon!
